Zoom AI Companion

Introducing AI Companion

Zoom meetings now boost collaboration, connection and creativity through the power of artificial intelligence (AI). ASU community members can now opt in to utilize select features of Zoom's new generative AI assistant, AI Companion

With the FERPA-compliant AI Companion and the consent of your meeting participants, you can save time, enhance overall productivity,  and make your virtual collaborations more efficient and seamless.

Key features

  • Companion Questions: AI Companion lets you quickly catch up and clarify what you missed in a meeting without interruption. This can spark engaging discussions and ensure everyone's voice is heard.
  • Smart Recordings: AI Companion brings intelligence to your recordings, allowing you to quickly revisit key moments and insights. This feature is enhanced with conversation analytics, topic-tracking indicators, and playlists.
  • Meeting Summaries: AI Companion provides meeting summaries, highlighting who said what, essential topics, and outlining next steps, all available via email and Team Chat. This ensures everyone leaves with the same conversation record and understanding of action items.

Best practices

ASU best practice notes that if you use an AI transcription service, the provided Zoom instance is the only FERPA-approved choice. Keep this in mind while utilizing other third-party tools.

While the opportunities afforded by these new features are exciting, it is essential to keep in mind:

  • Always obtain the consent of all meeting attendees before using the AI Companion.
  • The AI companion is FERPA-compliant and may be used in teaching, learning, or advising settings. Please consider sensitive information, such as copyright and intellectual property, when deciding whether to use the AI Companion or any other recording feature, as well as the summary it provides. If you opt in to this feature in your account, you will not be able to turn it off during the meeting. Additionally, the companion keeps transcript records for 30 days.
  • Community members with HIPAA restrictions in Zoom will not have access to the companion feature.

As always, before using any generative AI tools, please review the AI Digital Trust guidelines to ensure you understand the responsibilities and expectations for data privacy, copyright, and intellectual property protections at ASU.
