ASU Deputy CIO Kyle Bowen appointed to Arizona’s first AI steering committee
ASU Enterprise Technology deputy chief information officer, Kyle Bowen, has been selected by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs to be a member of the state’s first AI steering committee.
In an announcement shared yesterday, the Office of the Governor noted that the committee intends to develop statewide policy framework and governance strategy for AI use in Arizona, guiding decisions surrounding AI implementation across the state for public use.
“This committee will ensure that AI is implemented in a way that expands opportunity, strengthens public trust, and delivers better outcomes for every Arizonan,” Hobbs said.
According to the office of the governor, the committee will also:
- Recommend governance models and procurement guidelines for AI adoption across agencies
- Engage communities and stakeholders to ensure inclusive and just AI implementation
- Identify opportunities to strengthen AI literacy, workforce preparedness, and innovation
In his role, Bowen oversees much of the university’s AI advances, including the work of the AI Acceleration team — which includes over 70 AI specialists and engineers. Bowen also provided executive leadership for the launch of the AI Innovation Challenge last year. The Challenge, which first launched in spring 2024 in collaboration with OpenAI, has activated nearly 500 AI projects across academics, research and work to date.
Today, Bowen and his team are helping to lead AI efforts with teams across ASU Health, Dreamscape Learn and more.

- Hon. Bill Gates, executive director of ASU Mechanics of Democracy Laboratory and professor of practice at the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions.
