Canvas incident 2026: What to know

Third update: May 12, 2026

9:08 a.m., MST

Thank you for your patience and flexibility as the University continues responding to the recent security incident involving Canvas.

As of May 12, 2026, Instructure has published an FAQ outlining their goals for comprehensive review, current security measures and customer-specific support. Canvas by Instructure is fully operational. Core learning data is not compromised.

Is Canvas functional?

Canvas is fully operational and can be used as normal for working, teaching, learning and collaboration.

What information was involved?

According to Instructure, the data fields involved in this incident include usernames, email addresses, course names, enrollment information and discussion board content.

Canvas will give ASU clear guidance if any further action is required on your end. That communication will come from ASU to you. Right now, there's nothing you need to do.

For a more in-depth review, we encourage interested community members to review the entire FAQ to learn more about this incident and the steps being taken to mitigate impact and circumvent further disruptions.

Second update: May 8, 2026

4:29 p.m., MST

ASU’s Canvas instances (e.g., canvas.asu.edu, asu.instructure.com) have been restored for all community members.

Canvas can be accessed on desktop or mobile for learning, work and teaching. Students and professors have received emails outlining next steps and should remain in contact to coordinate any individualized plans moving forward.

In response to the outage, ASU took additional security measures, including resetting all connections to external tools integrated with Canvas. This does not include ASURITE credentials, which are not stored in the Instructure environment and have not been compromised. All tools connected to Canvas were assessed, and the University continues to monitor network traffic for anomalous behavior.

Next steps

We ask that instructors continue to monitor their email inbox for continued communication from the University. Should additional service disruptions occur, updates will also be provided on this page.

Students with questions or concerns about final exams, grades and coursework should contact their instructors directly if they have not already received course-specific correspondence in their ASU inbox.

Those experiencing ongoing technical difficulties are encouraged to contact the Experience Center at (855) 278-5080 or live chat for review.

Update: May 8, 2026

ASU’s Canvas instances (e.g., canvas.asu.edu, asu.instructure.com) have been restored for all community members.

Canvas can be accessed on desktop or mobile for learning, work and teaching. Final exams canceled due to the Canvas outage remain canceled. In-person finals will continue as scheduled. Additionally, the University is testing all external tools integrated with Canvas and monitoring ASU networks for any anomalous activity from Instructure to ensure continued functionality. Although some Canvas-related services remain unavailable at this time, we anticipate their timely restoration and will continue to update our community as service disruptions are resolved.

Former communications from May 7, 2026

ASU’s Canvas instances (e.g., canvas.asu.edu, asu.instructure.com) are currently unavailable to all community members, who are now routed to a system maintenance screen when attempting to access Canvas through either link. The issue originated within the Instructure environment and is not related to ASU-managed systems.

On May 7 at 1:00 p.m. MST, operations teams began receiving and investigating reports that ASU community members attempting to access Canvas, a service owned by Instructure, were being redirected to a security incident notification screen.
